What Was That? is a local iPhone app made by platret. The app does not require an account and does not collect analytics, run advertisements, or send your recommendations to a server.

Your recommendations

Titles, names, notes, links, collections, and tried/favourite status are stored on your device. The app and its widget extension use a shared App Group container so widgets can display your saved ideas. Your iPhone backup settings determine whether app data is included in device backups.

Sharing and external links

Sharing sends the selected recommendation or collection, including the names, notes, and links attached to it. Check its contents before sharing. Recipients get a copy; later edits do not sync. Opening a saved web link sends you to an external website with its own privacy practices.

Backups and deletion

You can export a JSON backup, restore a backup, and delete recommendations or collections. Backups contain your full library. Removing the app and its widgets removes their local container; separately exported files and backups must be removed separately.

This website

This site is hosted on Cloudflare, which may process standard request information under Cloudflare’s privacy policy. Fonts load from Google Fonts, which receives a request from your browser. The interactive example runs in your browser without storing your selections. There are no analytics scripts or advertising cookies.
